La Giralda

La Giralda

Emblematic Symbol of Seville

History and Description

La Giralda is the bell tower of Seville Cathedral and one of the city's most recognizable symbols. Originally it was the minaret of the Almohad mosque, built between 1184 and 1198.

At 104.5 meters tall, after the Christian conquest the bell body (1558-1568) was added in Renaissance style. Its name comes from the Giraldillo, the bronze statue crowning the tower that turns with the wind.
